Storing Your Vehicle For the Winter

With the weather turning colder, it is time to start storing your recreation vehicles for the winter. Store these items at Lock Box Self Storage, and you’ll have more room in your garage. We have storage units where a vehicle can be parked inside a storage unit or in one of our outdoor parking spaces. We have some tips to help when storing your vehicles for the winter.

Change the Oil & Fill the Gas Tank

If you’ll be storing your vehicle for more than three months, change the oil before dropping it off at the storage facility. Filling the fuel tank and adding a stabilizer to prevent moisture buildup, gum, and varnish.

Cleaning the Vehicle’s Exterior

If you’ll be storing your vehicle inside a storage unit. Make sure to wash and wax the vehicle to have it in the best condition during storage. When storing a vehicle outside washing waxing the vehicle will help prevent rusting and paint chipping. Make sure to get a cover that fits your vehicle to help with the sun and outside weather.

Cleaning the Vehicle’s Interior

Make sure you aren’t storing any food or have crumbs that could attract unwanted animals. Vacuum out all the crumbs and toss out any trash.

Wiping down the interior so you don’t leave any traces of food. Use an interior conditioner to help preserve the interior of the vehicle.

Keeping the Battery Charged

An unused battery will eventually lose its charge. If you can’t, have someone start the vehicle every few weeks and drive it for about 15 minutes if possible. It is also a good idea to run the air conditioner and heater. When you take the vehicle out for a drive, run these items keep the parts in working order.

Prevent Flat Spots

Make sure the tires are inflated to the recommended tire pressure. If the vehicle is left stationary for too long, the tires could develop flat spots as the weight of the vehicle presses down in the same spot. Having the vehicle drive every few weeks will help bring the tires up to their normal temperature and get rid of any flat spots.
